Moisture Control in Homes
Moisture Control in Homes

Moisture is particular concern when retrofitting homes or using advanced construction techniques. Our group works on both field monitoring and modeling of moisture balances in homes to troubleshoot existing problems and predict when new problems might occur. We combine field studies with custom physical models to investigate moisture dynamics in indoor air HVAC equipment and building envelopes. Recent studies have instrumented attics in homes with vapor-permeable roof-deck insulation.
Moisture dynamics in homes are complex and often have unintended consequences. This image shows condensation behind insulation in an insulated roof deck.

These studies are helping industry to develop guidelines for use of vapor-permeable insulation including the influence of weather, and attic venting/conditioning strategies. Key technical advances are being made in our understanding of moisture transport in attics, including issues related to moisture stratification and the dynamics of moisture storage and cycling.
